As the world already knows, plastic surgery in Asia is becoming a common thing to the people, even to a point that double eyelid surgery is so typical that girls have been known to receive the procedure as a graduation gift. Other than just minor eye surgery, how far has the Asian culture adapted surgery? According to some, and with proof to finalize that thought, surgery has become dead-serious.
As an attempt to show the physical costs and sacrifices that
women endure from surgery, photographer Ji
Yeo has been photographing pictures of women after surgery and the pain
they go through to heal. Although, in “Korea’s beauty-obsessed culture” where
women are judged by beauty and men judged by their financial sheets, women have
proven to be willing to go through radical measures to live up to the
high-expectations of Asian beauty.
As a result to this willingness and uncertainty, some people
have faced the consequences of surgeries going wrong. Even though the proofs of
possible horrifying side-effects are there, many remain unmoved by the effects
and continue on as plastic surgery is more popular than ever before.
As popularity for surgery has risen, acceptance has also
given rise. Miss Universe 2013’s Miss
Korea, Kim Yumi had no hesitations
in admitting her multiple procedures, while another woman who was incredibly
obsessed with Miranda Kerr’s looks
that she went the trouble of going under the knife to look like the Australian Victoria’s Secret model.
Now, as the rising hobby of getting plastic surgery is
growing, there is a Korean television show entitled, “Let’s Beauty”. Claims from asiantown.net
say that the purpose of the show is to “help those with special circumstances
or people who are too ugly to feel confident in their life.” The participant of
the show that faces “special circumstances” will have plastic surgery that is
sponsored by the TV program while the audience follows along through the transformation.
The show has caught the attention of citizens and especially
netizens all around the world with their episode featuring a pair of twin
sisters who participate in the show. As they get their surgery, the results are
jaw-dropping as the both of them are totally unrecognizable.
