Egypt’s capital, Cairo
has been blanketed in snow for the first time in a long time (112 years to
be estimated) on Friday morning. The exact time of when the snow appear is
unclear, but the residents all around the area have been taking pictures and
uploading them to social networking sites and tweeting pictures as well.
Ali Abdelazim, an official at Egypt’s
meteorological center has made a statement after seeing the snowfall in the
suburbs of Cairo, “It is the first time in very many years,” he said.
The rare snowfall which has not only blanketed
Cairo, but Egypt’s Port of Alexandria and
Jerusalem as well, which was actual
the doings of the storm Alexa which
has also pounded Lebanon and parts
of Northern Syria since Wednesday.
Because of the storm, temperatures have fallen below zero resulting in snow,
sleet, and heavy rain.
Although some residents were amazed to witness the
rare sight, the snow wasn’t able to bring happiness to everyone as the weather
delayed and airlift of food and aid from Iraq
to displaced families in Syria for
a second day which the people needed desperately, according to the United Nations food agency. Also, at
the Gaza Strip, 500 people had to be
evacuated from their homes as the region wasn’t used to the snow as they
received their first snow in a decade.
